Why don't we show equipment prices on our website? Our prices are so low that the manufacturers don't allow us to advertise them.

 Simultaneous Interpretation FAQ's
Frequently Asked Questions about  Simultaneous Interpreters and Simultaneous Interpretation

Why do we need a technical interpreter?  If somebody is a simultaneous interpreter, they should be able to do the job, as long as they have a glossary, shouldn't they?

We are often asked this question, particularly since many disreputable simultaneous interpretation agencies use the omniscience of their simultaneous interpreters as one of their big selling points, maintaining that they are trained to handle any subject.  For a full discussion of this question, please click on:  Can a good simultaneous interpreter handle all subjects?

We don't need very high quality, can't you just do it without a booth and all that fancy equipment?

We design each interpretation package around the needs of your meeting, convention, or seminar.   There are situations that do not require a booth and others that do.   Depending on the needs of the meeting, we may use tabletop transmitters or wireless mobile transmitters

The most common examples of simultaneous interpreting without a booth are

  1. Site visits, trade shows, factory tours, poster sessions, etc. where the participants and interpreters are on the move.

  2. Brief meetings (for example,  lunch or dinner speeches)

  3. Small meetings with ten or fewer participants (for example, board of directors or committee meetings)

Our purpose is to ensure that we deliver the  most cost-effective and highest quality interpretation service.   Therefore, we will use as much or as little equipment as is required to accomplish that goal without sacrificing quality.

If your budget is restricted, sometimes we may recommend that you hire less-qualified freelancers who can work within your price range, and we will rent you basic interpretation equipment for less than any competitor's price.

Can we get just simultaneous interpreters for a convention from you?  We have somebody who can get us the equipment.

The quality of a simultaneous interpretation depends largely on the quality of the working  conditions and equipment provided to the interpreters.  The booth's sound insulation, dimensions, and air quality, as well as the sound quality of the headphones, microphones, and other equipment, are integral components of the simultaneous interpretation process.

We design the entire interpretation package to be the most cost-effective professional option, but we only provide conference interpreters when we also provide the equipment.  In addition to the services of some of the best simultaneous interpreters in the world, our interpretation package includes all necessary simultaneous interpretation equipment at a substantial discount.

You can certainly hire less-qualified interpreters for less, but you cannot rent the same quality of equipment for less anywhere.

Can we hire you to do just the keynote speaker for about an hour each day?   The rest of the convention is not that important;  we have people in the company who speak the language and can handle it.

Yes, you can hire us to work for only an hour each day and we can also rent you equipment to use in the other sessions.  Whether that is a cost-effective option for you, depends on a number of variables.  We'll be happy to discuss your options with you

In the past we have had interpreters just set up at a table and talk into a microphone connected to a transmitter and they did a good job.  Can't you just do it that way?

Sometimes we can do simultaneous interpreting without a booth;  it all depends on the needs of your meeting.  Tell us about your meeting and let us design the most cost-effective, professional-quality option for you.

Last year we had interpreters and they used these little transmitters about the size of a pack of cards and just stood near the speaker and whispered into a microphone.  That was a lot cheaper than your booths and it was fine for us; nobody complained.  Can't you just do that?

You are describing whispering interpretation using  wireless transmitters.   We do use that technique, but only when it is the best option for your meeting.  When appropriate, we will do  simultaneous interpretation without a booth using a variety of equipment and techniques, but we will not sacrifice quality.

Tell us about your meeting and let us design the most cost-effective, professional-quality option for you.  If you prefer to save money by hiring less-qualified interpreters, we will rent you as much or as little equipment as you like, and we will do it for less than any competitor's price.

Do you have to use equipment?  We thought that the people who need interpretation could sit in the back of the auditorium and the interpreter could sit in the middle and interpret for them like we've seen it done when a foreign delegation visits the President.  They don't use equipment and these are very high-level people.

What you are describing is whispering interpretation.  This technique is properly used when there are only one or two listeners in a small meeting room and the interpreters sit right next to the speakers.  Whispering is only recommended for brief one-on-one meetings.  It is not appropriate for a convention setting for several reasons, among others:

  1. The sound level at a convention is usually quite loud and it will interfere with the participant's ability to hear the interpretation if it is whispered.
  2. On the other hand, if the interpreter speaks loud enough to be heard, it will distract and annoy the participants who do not need interpretation.
  3. Although the sound is quite loud, it is not clear enough for purposes of interpretation,  since an interpreter needs much clearer sound than a listener.
